MONTANA

During the 1973 wheat marketing year (July 1, 1973 - June 30, 1974) 91.5 million bushels
of wheat were shipped out of State according to the Montana Crop and Livestock Reporting
Service. This represented 83 percent of the available supply (beginning stocks, plus
production, less ending stocks) during this period. An additional 12.8 million bushels
was used for flour seed and feed in the State.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST MOVEMENT: For the 1973 marketing year, 83.6 million bushels of wheat
were moved to the Pacific Northwest — of which 21.6 million
bushels were ground for flour in Oregon and Washington, and 62 million bushels (74 percent)
were exported from Pacific Northwest ports. This compares with 96.9 million bushels
shipped to the Pacific Northwest in the 1972 marketing year— 21.5 million bushels for
flour and 75.4 million bushels exported.

Montana wheat comprised 34 percent of "red wheat" exports from the Pacific Northwest
in 1973. This percent was down sharply from earlier years due to the heavy movement of
red wheat from CCC stocks and other areas to meet the large foreign sales that period.
